Do you provide natural and eco-friendly candle wax options?
- Yes, we prioritize eco-friendly options in our candle wax collection. Several of our wax choices, such as soy wax and coconut soy wax, are known for their sustainability and minimal environmental impact.
Soy Wax: Most U.S. soy wax suppliers (including ours) do not make specific non-GMO claims, but it is generally understood that within the soy wax manufacturing process, any genetically modified material stays with the protein (meal), leaving the oil (which is what is used in soy wax production) GMO-free.
Most U.S. soy wax producers purchase soybeans from farms in the heart of the United States that have existed for generations. This means the soybeans come from fields using sustainable farming techniques which are not associated with any destructive or non-sustainable farming practices such as deforestation. Furthermore, U.S. soybean farmers understand the importance of sustainable farming to protect valuable environmental resources. By doing so, they preserve and protect their farming operation for the next generation. More than 300,000 U.S. soybean farmers follow the conservation regulations and farming practices outlined in the U.S. Soybean Sustainability Protocol, or SSAP.
Five Things Buyers of U.S. Soy Wax Might Not Know about the SSAP:
1. Buyers of U.S. soy and soy wax products can be assured that more than 300,000 U.S. soybean farmers – the vast majority in America – have followed guidelines for responsible farming. This means they are purchasing a sustainably-grown soy wax product.
2. The guidelines included in the SSAP set required steps for U.S. soybean farmers to continuously improve their sustainability performance. In other words, U.S. soybean farmers aren’t resting on their laurels – they’re constantly improving to ensure an even more sustainable product in the future.
3. In addition, the SSAP includes farm audits conducted by an independent third party – the U.S. Department of Agriculture. But the SSAP isn’t just supported by the U.S. government; it’s also positively benchmarked against the soy sourcing guidelines of the European Feed Association, (FEFAC), and by the independent International Trade Centre (ITC).
4. The SSAP has a quantifiable and results-driven approach to continuous improvement, which is constantly reviewed and updated according to metrics and feedback.
5. Between now and the year 2025, U.S. soybean farmers aim to reduce land impact (measured in tons per hectare) by 10 percent; reduce soil erosion (measured per ton) by an additional 25 percent; increase energy use efficiency by 10 percent of BTUs used per ton; and reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent.
Our soy wax vendors confirm through their participation in the United States Soybean Export Council (USSEC) and adherence to the US Soybean Sustainability Assurance Protocol (SSAP), sustainability positions posted on their external websites or through direct communications with us that their products are sustainably-produced, maintaining transparency of all land use, human rights, fair trade, and environmental efforts, as discussed in the SSAP. Participation in the USSEC includes third-party farm audits by the United States Department of Agriculture.
Palm Wax: Most U.S. palm wax suppliers (including ours) are participating members of RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm). Please see https://rspo.org for additional information. Makesy is also RSPO certified.
Coconut Wax: Our coconut wax vendors are listed among the founding membership and current participants in The Sustainable Certified Coconut Oil (SCNO) Project, a public-private-partnership initiative which aims at increasing the quantity of sustainably produced and certified coconut oil and coconut wax, and at increasing smallholder coconut farmers’ incomes in the Philippines and in Indonesia.
Hemp Wax: Hemp seed oil is used in creating our unique and natural hemp wax blends. Hemp seed oil is made by harvesting the small seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant and cold-pressing them to extract their oils. Full-term hemp requires 100 to 120 days to mature. Harvesting for the seed occurs 4–6 weeks later than the harvest of hemp fibers, when 60–70% of the seed has ripened. The target production of seeds per acre in hemp grown specifically for seed use is about 20-25 pounds. That comes at the rate of about 100-125 seeds per square meter, which can hold 10 to 12 plants. Hemp seed oil does not contain THC and has little to no CBD content.
Beeswax: It takes approximately 60 lbs of Honey Comb to make 1 lb of Beeswax. This is why the cost of beeswax is generally higher than other natural wax blends. We support happy bees! The beekeepers that we work with are wholeheartedly committed to caring for their bees with respect and safety for their well-being. As they say, the bees are their lives! Bees typically forage up to 2 miles to collect nectar.
Are your candle waxes compatible with fragrance oils for scented candles?
Yes, all of our candle waxes are designed to work seamlessly with fragrance oils. You can choose from our wide range of fragrance oils to create beautifully scented candles that captivate your customers. We recommend using an 8-10% fragrance load across all of our candle wax blends.
Can I use your candle waxes for making pillar candles or votives?
You can certainly use our candle wax options for crafting pillar candles or votives. We offer two specific candle waxes designed for making pillar candles, which require harder waxes that can hold their shape. Typically pillar waxes are made from paraffin wax or soy-paraffin wax blends. You'll need suitable pillar molds and wicks for these types of candles. We recommend using our Super Silicone candle molds that are very easy to demold and work with, along with our 10” Performance Cotton Wicks to complete your candle-making supplies for crafting the perfect pillar candles.
What is the recommended pouring temperature for your candle waxes?
The recommended pouring temperature may vary depending on the specific wax type. We provide detailed instructions and guidelines for each wax, including the ideal pouring temperature. It's essential to follow these recommendations to achieve the best results and avoid issues like wax cracking or frosting. You can find the recommended pouring temperature in the product details section for each candle wax product page.
