How to Formulate Skincare and Haircare Products

Take your making skills to the next level with our tips & tricks for how to formulate your own skin & hair care line.

In this video, Matt, our in-house hair and skin care expert, joins Charlotte to give you all the advice on how to start formulating your own products. If you're new to the game, this is the perfect place for you to start!

The number one tip we can give to you newbie makers is to KEEP IT SIMPLE! We know how intimidating it can be, but remember to keep your list down to 1-3 different ingredients that you want to focus on or better yet, pick one, and build around it. For example, if you have an oil you really want to work with in your product, don't be afraid to make it the main character! It's your product at the end of the day, so make the kind of product you want to sell.

Let's start off with some cream formulations, for example. For a lighter, more airy cream like a day cream, the basic ingredients are water, oils, butters, and actives. For a heavier cream like a night cream, the ingredients are pretty much the same, but you would want to use thicker butters and oils to really hydrate the skin.

For cleansers, the four main ingredients are water, thickeners, natural gums, and surfactants (which are essentially soaps and what cause the suds when mixed with water). Surfactants definitely get a bad rep but they are necessary to lift the dirt and excess oil off the skin. Make sure you pay attention to the kind of skin your product is being made for. This goes for haircare products the same.

If you are just starting out and don't know what to make or want to test out some of our products, definitely check out our projects page on our site.
