Black-Owned Candle Businesses
We believe in the importance of highlighting makers in our community who are making their creative and entrepreneurial mark on the world all year-round. We love seeing and sharing your successes!
As we celebrate Black History Month, we are putting the spotlight on Black-owned business owners – this is the time to celebrate their achievements, support and encourage our incredible community, and provide a space for their stories to live.
Meet some of our makers representing the Black community with their ultra-creative talents.
noa lux
We spotted Tissanie Sayles, creator of Noa Lux, in one of our maker groups where she announced her recent launch of her gorgeous products on noaluxco.com.
Tissanie has the hit-the-ground-running drive of a true entrepreneur and has found success in several different endeavors like receiving an MBA in International Business, traveling to 25 different countries, and baking and decorating cakes in her spare time (we love a naturally creative soul)!
Her favorite Noa Lux candles are Cabo and Noa, and to top it all off, she named her business after her adorable daughter Noa Victoria. You can follow her on Instagram @noaluxco and get a glimpse of her personal curated creations for some maker inspiration.
how they're celebrating black history month
"I started off Black History Month with the launch of my company. All month long and beyond, I want to celebrate Black excellence and support these businesses because we are all trying to fulfill a dream and build generational wealth.
We can all show support by using our buying power to make a purchase, writing reviews or providing constructive feedback, sharing the business on our social media, and remaining supportive and uplifting."
49 holland
Owned by Candida Encarnacion Patrick, 49 Holland is named after the street she grew up on in Brooklyn, NY. As a wife, mother, full-time employee, and creator/business owner, Candida’s key to success is starting where you are and prioritizing what matters most.
Candida feels inspired by high-end luxury products, which is exactly what 49 Holland emulates with intentional candle creations, elevated reed diffusers, and classy room sprays.
We love how her Goodnight 0.05 candle presents itself and offers a warm vanilla and eucalyptus scent! You can visit her shop to browse her beautifully handcrafted candles at 49holland.com and on Instagram @49Holland.
how they're celebrating black history month
"I am collaborating with other Black makers and giving mentorship to up-and-coming entrepreneurs. It's a great way for me to give back to the Black community and uplift makers."
the koop
The Koop is a black immigrant-owned business and is described as “a place of solace.” Kristin Balgar and her mom, Eleanor, are the ones who run the show at The Koop where their products are inspired by everyday subtle luxuries.
They believe simple joys like going for a walk or that first sip of coffee are often taken for granted, that living a life of luxury doesn’t have to be monetary, that luxury is everywhere, and that it should be celebrated everyday.
They do more than just create luxurious candles – together, they’ve donated over $2,500 to several Black Lives Matter charities and they are committed to giving back and assisting immigrant families as much as they can.
We love their commitment to their community and the picture-perfect products they’re creating. You can visit their website thekoopnewyork.com and follow them on Instagram @thekoopnyc.
how they're celebrating black history month
"This month we are celebrating but actually taking it slower! This is a time that we think it’s important for us to share resources and charities that we admire. This is our second Black History Month that we’ve been in business so we’re using this time to reflect on everything we did the year before and get excited for spring and the seasons ahead."
We hope you continue to follow these amazing makers on their creative adventures! The commitment they have to their craft is inspiring and we can’t wait to see what their futures hold. Stay tuned for more maker spotlights as we continuously commit to providing a platform that highlights incredible makers doing (and making) incredible things.
We welcome your stories and would love to hear from you! Feel free to drop us a dm @makesy… you never know when it’s your turn to be featured.
Happy making!
