Candle Safety 101

Safety first! In this video learn the importance of candle safety and some hot tips from the experts at the National Candle Association to keep you safe!

There are a few important rules that every candle-maker should know and follow.

- First, to ensure your candle does not overheat, it should not be burned for more than 4 hours in one given cycle. The candle's temperature continues to rise as time goes on and it can even cause an explosion.

- Candles should never be left unattended or near flammable items.

- The candle flame should not be blown out because this causes the hot embers to spread in the room. They should be extinguished using a candle snuffer or put out using the lid to deprive the candle of oxygen. We have pre-made warning labels that can be placed on the bottom of all the candles that you sell! They include all this info plus proper burn instructions as well.

- Wick clips are made to be a certain height above the bottom of the vessel allowing heat to properly circulate and reduce overheating. Here at makesy, we have created a low profile wick clip that can be used in tea lights or smaller candles where fire hazard is less of a concern.

- If you are burn testing and your flame is larger than 1/2 inch and producing red embers, put out the flame immediately and you'll want to wick down to find a more optimal flame.

-Never throw water on wax that has caught fire. Use a fire-proof blanket or fire extinguisher instead.

-Finally, if you own a business, make sure you have the right insurance coverage.
